3–9 October 1864
9 October 1864
At four, went to kirk with Lenchen and Augusta Stanley. Dr. Macleod performed the service admirably, and gave us a very striking ser- mon, all extempore, and appealing very strongly to the people's feelings. Saw good Dr. Macleod afterwards, and was much upset in talking to him of my sorrows, anxieties, and overwhelming cares ; and he was so kind and sympathising, so encouraging and full of that faith and hope which alone can comfort and sustain the broken heart. In his sermon he spoke of there being peace with- out happiness, and happiness without peace, which is so true.
