4 September 1857
Yesterday with Henry at the Estabrook Farm, and Ebba Hubbard's swamp to see the yellow birches, which grow larger than I have seen them elsewhere. The biggest measured, at five feet from the ground, ten feet, five inches in circumference. We found bass, thorn-tree {Cra- tagus\ feverbush abounding ; a huge ivy run- ning up from the base round a (?) tree, to the height of twenty or thirty feet, like a hairy snake ; Osmunda regalis, white mint, pennyroyal, calamint, aster corymbosa, the bay-berry, amphi- carpaa, botrycbium onoclea, brake tripartite.
