19–25 November 1855

I am in Petersburg, at Turgenev’s. Lost before leaving, 2800 and 600 rubles. Managed with difficulty to transfer it to my debtors. Took 875 rubles in the village. It is most important for me to behave myself well here. For that I need chiefly (1) to deal cautiously but boldly with people who can harm me, (2) to manage my expenses wisely, and (3) to work. To-morrow I will write Youth and a b^t of my Diary
