8 February 1848

Duke of Cleveland's land extends from the point where we first entered it, coming from Darlington, toward Barnard Castle, twenty-three miles to High Force, where theTees falls two hun- dred and twelve feet. After passing Raby Castle, we met the Duke returning from hunting with his hounds, the horses and dogs very much blown and spent. The huntsman, as he passed us, told our coachman that they had had a des- perate run of two hours, twenty-five minutes, without check. Beside him, rode the whipper-in, and, a little behind, the Duke and a gentleman, in red hunting-coats.
