23–29 April 1855

24 April 1855

Fourth Bastion. Have received 300 rubles from home. Paid Meshch^rski and Bogaevski, but not the others because I want to play a little. Have received a letter from my Aunt,* which I have handed to Kovatevski to give to the Pripce. These two pleasant things more than anything else, I think, have deterred me from work, so that I am in a terribly cold, practical, state of mind, Tolst6y>s paternal aunt, Pelagiya Illmshna Y ushkova. and in two days at the Bastion have only revised some sheets of Sevastopol.
